Article by BID for the IMB Independent Monitor on access to justice for immigration detainees held in prison estate
In a report for the Association of Members of Independent Monitoring Boards (AMIMB) March 2015 edition of Independent Monitor, Research & Policy manager Dr Adeline Trude shares BID's concerns about the "multiple, systemic, and compounding barriers to accessing justice" experienced by immigration detainees held post-sentence in the prison estate in the UK. While detainees in the immigration removal centre (IRC) estate have access to mobile phones, faxes and legal advice surgeries, detainees in prisons have none of these, with consequences for their ability to access the courts, legal advice, and the Home Office.
BID has a unique prisons legal team which works with immigration detainees in prisons to provide legal advice and representation, outreach in the form of legal surgeries, provide self-help materials, and deliver training for prison staff.
