This Mental Health Awareness Week (Monday 15th to 21st May)help the Human Disco Ball raise an emergency solidarity fund for our work.
Why is it important to take part?
Across the UK, thousands of vulnerable adults are routinely locked up in detention centres. This includes those born and/or raised in the UK, asylum seekers, survivors of torture or trafficking, and people with mental health conditions and learning difficulties.
Under the proposed ‘Illegal Migration Bill’, anyone who enters the UK illegally will be banned from making a claim for asylum in the UK. If it is passed, we are likely to see vast increases in the number of refugees locked up across the UK in the detention system.
How is this linked to mental health?
Immigration detention is extremely damaging for people's mental health and our clients often describe it as 'psychological toture.' According to the Refugee Council, asylum seekers are 500% more likely to suffer with their mental health than the general population. 61% of refugees experience severe mental distress.
1 in 3 of us in the UK struggle with our mental health. We know what it feels like to struggle and how important our loved ones and communities are to our healing. Help us raise money to ensure that people locked up in detention centres have access to free legal advice so they can be reunited with friends and family, and heal in their communities, instead of suffering alone.
